GAMH Social Isolation and Loneliness Service

Social Isolation and Loneliness Service for Young People

Are you a young person in Glasgow who is feeling low or alone? The Social Isolation and Loneliness Service (SIAL) from GAMH may be able to help.

As part of GAMH’s Young Adult Wellbeing Services, SIAL supports young people aged 16 to 25. It is for those with mild to moderate mental health challenges who are also facing social isolation and loneliness.

Learn how the GAMH Social Isolation and Loneliness Service works, how it can help mental health recovery, who can take part, and how to refer a Young Adult to the service.

    Evaluation and research

The GAMH Social Isolation and Loneliness Service is for Young People in Glasgow aged 16 to 25. It supports those who feel lonely and are finding life difficult due to mental health issues.

The service runs group sessions once a week, for 12 week blocks. These sessions take place at GAMH and other places across the city.

Each SIAL group includes:

  • Eight workshops that explore peer support, mental health, and understanding loneliness.
  • Four social activities such as cinema trips, bowling, or meals out.

The goal of the Social Isolation and Loneliness Service is to help Young People feel less alone, build their confidence, and support mental health recovery.

How to access the GAMH Social Isolation and Loneliness Service.

SIAL sessions help Young People:

  • Learn more about mental health and loneliness.
  • Try self-help tools and ideas to feel better.
  • Meet others and build new social connections.
  • Gain skills and become more independent. Each group is led by a Young Adult Support Worker who is there to guide and support participants.

The programme is designed to reduce social isolation and loneliness in a safe way.

How to access the GAMH Social Isolation and Loneliness Service.

To access the SIAL service, a young person must:

  •  Be aged 16 to 25
  •  Live in Glasgow
  •  Be experiencing mild to moderate mental health issues, and
  •  Be experiencing social isolation or loneliness.

Young People and family members cannot refer to the SIAL service. They must be referred by a support agency, such as social work services, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), Youth health services, Education, and Third sector organisations.

The referring agency will review the Evaluation and Research information and then complete a referral form on your behalf.

Please note: Each SIAL programme runs in blocks of 12-weeks. A young person may need to wait until the next block starts to join.

Got a question about SIAL? Get in touch with our project coordinator.

GAMH checks how well the SIAL service is working for young people. If a young person joins, they will be asked if they want to take part in our review process.

If they say yes, they will be asked to fill out two short surveys:

  • One before they start
  • One after their final session

All answers are confidential and anonymised. Taking part in this review is optional.
