A Carer is someone who looks after another person without being paid. This might be a partner, child, family member, or friend who could not manage day to day without help.

The person being cared for might have:

  • an illness
  • poor mental health
  • an addiction
  • frailties due to old age
  • a disability, or
  • a combination of all of these.

Carers can live with the person they support, or they may live somewhere else. Many people do not even realise they are carers. Carers can be any age, from any background, gender, race or faith.

Caring is very important, but it can also be very hard. Many carers feel tired, stressed or lonely. Caring can affect your own mental health and wellbeing.

GAMH north-east Carers service is here to give support and advice for Carers to help make day-to-day life a bit easier.
