GAMH partners with Alzheimer Scotland to help carers supporting people living with Dementia

As part of GAMH’s work with unpaid carers in Glasgow, we’re partnering with Scotland’s leading Dementia charity, Alzheimer Scotland, to facilitate sessions within support groups and training for carers looking after someone with Dementia.

During Dementia Awareness Week, we’re shining a spotlight on the ways GAMH helps unpaid carers.

Supporting unpaid carers dealing with Dementia

Caring can be hugely rewarding, but it can also bring uncertainty – especially when thinking about the future and the impact of conditions such as Dementia.

Our approach to supporting unpaid carers works across three strands:

Building connections and providing much-needed reassurance for carers

Peer support group sessions can be a lifeline for carers supporting someone living with Dementia. They provide opportunities for carers to meet others in similar situations, share their experiences, and support one another.

Quotes by carers supporting people living with Dementia: I don't know how I would have coped without the peer support group from GAMH.

Building these connections can reduce feelings of isolation amongst carers. They also offer reassurance that carers are not alone on the journey of supporting a loved one.

Condition-specific training for unpaid carers

To help unpaid carers build confidence and understanding of individual conditions, GAMH provides a range of relevant training courses. Our Dementia training, for example, covers topics including:

  • What Dementia is and how it affects people
  • Communication techniques, including responding to stress and distress
  • Accessing benefits and financial support
  • Meaningful activities and staying connected.

Training isn’t limited to particular conditions like Dementia. GAMH also places a strong focus on carers’ wellbeing too. Our stress management and wellbeing sessions equip unpaid carers with the tools and strategies to look after their own mental and emotional health. Thus helping them maintain a healthy balance while caring for others.

Quotes by carers supporting people living with Dementia: I feel so much better taking some time out for myself, as I never do. I am definitely going to do this more often. Quote by a GAMH supported carer after taking a funded break from caring.

Practical advice for carers supporting people living with Dementia

Central to our support for unpaid carers is the objective of helping them feel listened to, informed and supported. We create a safe space where carers can talk about worries and concerns, and explore what the future might look like.

GAMH offers practical advice on key topics like Power of Attorney, helping carers to understand what is required, why it matters and how to get started.
