Pedal power: Q&A with GAMH volunteer ride leader Lyndsay
During Volunteers Week, we’re celebrating the volunteers who are a integral part of GAMH. Through a series of interviews, we’ll learn more about them and discover why they enjoy helping others.
Volunteers Week: Meet GAMH volunteer ride leader Lyndsay
Every week, volunteers help us to support people in Glasgow who are recovering from mental health problems. To get our Volunteers Week interview series started, we’re sitting down with GAMH volunteer cycle ride leader, Lyndsay, to find out what it’s like to be part of the team at the GAMH Community Hub and why she loves cycling and volunteering so much.
GAMH: Lyndsay, you’ve been involved in our GAMH Community Hub cycling team as a ride leader for several years now. What first encouraged you to get involved?
Lyndsay: I had finished working and wanted to find things to do. I love cycling and helping others gain confidence on a bike and find joy in riding. This seemed like the perfect way to do both.
GAMH: What is it about cycling that you enjoy the most?
Lyndsay: I think it’s the feeling of freedom. You’re going under your own steam. You can reach places that cars can’t and going out on a cycle always improves my mood.
GAMH: For a lot of volunteers, helping others is a big part of their motivation to get involved. What do you take away from your role as a GAMH volunteer?
Lyndsay: It’s good to feel useful, and I enjoy the rides as much as the rest of the group. Plus, it’s good for my own mental health.
GAMH: What keeps you coming back to volunteering each season?
Lyndsay: There is such a nice and friendly vibe at the Community Hub. It’s a great organisation to be involved with.
GAMH: Do you have any advice for those considering becoming a GAMH volunteer?
Lyndsay: Do it!
