GAMH launches pilot project with GP practices to raise awareness of support services for unpaid carers

At GAMH, we are always looking for new ways to support people in Glasgow. The latest is an innovative pilot project helping to connect unpaid carers in the northeast of Glasgow with the carer support services provided by GAMH’s Carers Service.

Pilot project aims to bridge the gap between unpaid carers and support services

Life for an unpaid carer is very challenging. Often, they have little time to look after their own wellbeing and aren’t aware of the support for unpaid carers provided by GAMH. To bridge that gap, we recently launched a pilot project in conjunction with GP medical centres based in the northeast of Glasgow.

Our partner medical centres are sending text messages to all patients to raise awareness of the support services provided by GAMH. The messages encourage anyone who identifies as an unpaid carer and would like support to share their contact details. Our team then follows up directly and connects unpaid carers with practical support, training and funded breaks from their caring responsibilities.

Working together to improve outcomes for carers and families in Glasgow

The pilot project started in February 2026, and the number of medical centres involved continues to expand. The take-up from unpaid carers has been very encouraging, and already we are seeing more carers looking to access help and support from GAMH.

Discussing the pilot project, GAMH’s Carers Service Manager Margaret McBride said: “We are absolutely delighted to be working with medical centres throughout the North East. This collaboration demonstrates a real commitment to recognising and supporting unpaid carers in the community. This pilot provides a valuable opportunity to reach out to unpaid carers and make them aware of the support available to help them in their caring role.”

Feedback from medical practices involved in the pilot has also been very positive, highlighting the value of partnership working and testing out innovative ways to engage with families in Glasgow.
