Mental Health Awareness Week: Positive Living workshops spotlight
While Mental Health Awareness Week is typically focused on raising awareness, this year the theme is ‘action’. When we take action on mental health, even small measures can make a big difference. Ahead of Mental Health Awareness Week starting 11 May, we’re taking a look at the action GAMH is taking through our Positive Living workshops.
Positive Living workshops that build connections, confidence and routines
Taking action is central to GAMH’s work supporting people recovering from mental health challenges. Across our support services for Adults and Young People, we encourage people to be proactive about their recovery through our Positive Living workshops.
Our Positive Living workshops are part of our Support Groups offering. They provide a welcoming space for people to try new activities like arts and crafts. For Mental Health Week, we will also host group discussions about mental health and resilience, taking members through mindfulness exercises and skills-based sessions.
These sessions focus on building connections, creating routines and building confidence. Often, people facing mental health challenges can lack a sense of community and feel socially isolated. Our groups are valued because people feel genuinely listened to and supported, while also having the opportunity to get out and connect with others in their community. By supporting people to make small changes in their lives, we can help them on the path to mental health recovery.

Taking action on mental health means being active too
The links between mental health and physical activity are well established. Across GAMH’s programmes, the people who use our services take part in a range of activities designed to support both mental and physical health.
Our walking, cycling and tennis groups also build on the principles of creating connections, forming positive routines and growing confidence. On the tennis court, our groups enjoy free coaching for beginners. While in the saddle, we help members build their confidence on the road to cycle for enjoyment and transport.
Thanks to our long-term partnership with ‘Get Active’ Kelvingrove Community Tennis and Sunny Cycles, people are able to continue attending groups beyond their time supported by GAMH. Helping them to continue positive routines and get the benefits of physical activity long-term.

Mental Health Support Groups for Adults and Young People
During Mental Health Awareness Week, we will be boosting our Positive Living workshops to include mindfulness activities, creative expression through arts and crafts, reflection exercises, and practical tips for managing stress. We’ll also be partnering with fellow charity Inner Space to deliver meditation workshops for our participants.
Whether people participate in our mental health workshops, use our Compassionate Distress Response Service, or spend time at our GAMH Community Hub, supporting people in Glasgow to be proactive about mental health recovery runs through everything we do.
