A quartet of questions with GAMH Art volunteer Olivia
Art and creativity play an important role in mental health recovery, and they are a big part of our work here at GAMH. Check out our quick-fire quartet of questions interview with GAMH Art volunteer Olivia to learn more.
What first attracted you to volunteering with GAMH?
“Art and creativity have such a positive impact on wellbeing and creating a sense of community. I wanted to be part of that, and GAMH has offered me the chance to help facilitate a really supportive and creative group.”
“I absolutely love being the Art volunteer and seeing people have a go at creating something. It’s been especially fun to work with the group members to plan the art group themes each week and how we can make our ideas come to life.”
Have there been any personal favourites so far? Horses in charcoal? Castles in crayon?
“My favourite theme and art medium so far has been insects in ink (and pencil, with added sequins to get that iridescent effect)!”
“I think it’s only fair to give a special mention to the artwork and posters we created for ‘Medieval bingo’. That was great fun, and everyone had such creative ideas.”
Random question: What’s your favourite vegetable from the GAMH allotment?
“I’d have to say that my favourite vegetable is beetroot. I know how to make a good beetroot and chocolate cake. So maybe my favourite vegetable is anything that can be made into a cake…or goes well with chocolate!”
What’s been your biggest takeaway from being an Art volunteer with GAMH?
“It has been great to be involved with and contribute to such a welcoming community. The members bring different skills and perspectives to the sessions.”
“GAMH is such a welcoming, friendly and supportive environment in which to volunteer. If you are thinking about getting involved, I would encourage you to try it.”
